Speaking Icebergish – A23a

Between Alarm and Aesthetic: A Critic's Reflection on “Speaking Icebergish – A23a”

In the blazing heat of a Mallorcan August, the HMH Gallery in Port Andratx offers not refuge, but revelation. Curated by Judith Sturm, Speaking Icebergish is no ordinary exhibition—it is a transcontinental symphony of silent voices, gathered under the haunting presence of the world’s largest iceberg, A23a. From August 1–15, 2025, this curated experience invites viewers into a poetic, participatory meditation on climate fragility and cultural empathy.

Mail Art as Global Resonance Born from an open call for triangular mail-art submissions, the initiative transforms everyday paper into vessels of planetary expression. With over 400 works spanning 36 countries—many crafted by children—the show transcends geography and hierarchy. The pieces are modest in form yet monumental in message, echoing the crystalline lattice of ice formations while constructing a metaphorical iceberg from human hope and anxiety.

An Iceberg as Protagonist A23a, calved from Antarctica in 1986 and adrift ever since, is not background but character. Now, as it drifts toward its final dissolution in temperate waters, it becomes a spectral symbol—of memory, entropy, and impending loss.

Its imagined language, “Icebergish,” becomes the exhibition’s conceptual core: What would an iceberg say, and do we still know how to listen?

Highlights of Poetic Precision

Maxima Maria Kinsky’s Sad Fairy of Iceberg A23a conjures a melancholic climate nymph—a fragile embodiment of melting glaciers and internal emotional climate.
The Polish duo Czeszre (Wojciech Czeronko and Piotr Szreniawski) delivers the titular piece Speaking Icebergish?, channeling metaphor into minimalist visual irony.

Jeeja Yuvraj Navghare’s yet-to-arrive contribution casts fictional calligraphy as an elegy for lost languages of nature.

Maks Dannecker offers a haunting photographic abstraction in ultramarine—where fresh meets salt, ice meets sea, without borders.
Anne Weigert’s Save the Bears satirizes the commodification of polar bears, morphing them into gummy bear motifs that tease and critique ecological branding.

Abdolreza Rabeti’s Human and Environment presents a somber iceberg silhouette entwined with fragile red flora—a study in wounded dignity.
Lars Schumacher’s All Good Words captures linguistic dissolution: words fragment like ice floes, drifting into an ocean of lost meaning.

Form as Metaphor By requesting equilateral triangle submissions, the curators orchestrate geometric unity among divergent voices. The shape references ice’s crystalline beauty and simultaneously permits the modular creation of a collaborative sculptural A23a—art as collective action.

Nomadic Continuity This exhibition refuses to remain static. In September, it migrates to Château de Monboucher in Dordogne, France, under the title Glace Nomade – L’Iceberg A23a en Voyage. Like its titular glacier, the show drifts—trailing questions, visuals, and unresolved emotions.

Critic's Verdict Speaking Icebergish does what few climate-themed exhibitions achieve: it merges activism with aesthetics without slipping into dogma. Its messages are whispered rather than shouted, yet they linger like echoes in melting caverns. This is not a sermon, but a séance—with art as medium between the seen and the sublimated.

As the iceberg continues to melt, the true question this exhibition asks is not whether we’re listening—but whether we care to learn the language before it disappears entirely.
