MITTE37 - A New Center for Art, Exchange and Experimentation
MITTE37 — A New Center for Art, Exchange and Experimentation
In the quiet heart of Burgdorf, just between the rhythms of everyday life and the wider cultural landscape of the Hannover region, a new artistic space is taking shape: MITTE37. More than a gallery, more than an atelier, and more than a temporary home for artists, it is a living, breathing place where contemporary art, cultural dialogue and creative hospitality come together.
At its core stands the studio of Susanne Schumacher, an artist whose practice moves confidently between photography, Fluxus, Mail Art and conceptual approaches. From this studio, a hybrid space unfolds — one that welcomes exhibitions, artistic production, residencies and neighborhood-based cultural work. MITTE37 is designed as an open forum, intentionally positioned outside the commercial gallery system. Here, proximity matters: proximity between artists and audiences, between guests and hosts, between ideas and the people who carry them.
The program embraces a wide range of artistic media — painting, photography, drawing, object art, installation, video and experimental formats — but its true center lies in communication and shared experience. Exhibitions are not simply shown; they are lived, discussed, and allowed to resonate.
Early Exhibitions: A Sense of Beginning
The inaugural exhibition, TIMEPICTURE – Light & Shadow, marks Susanne Schumacher’s first presentation in the newly opened space. Running from 9 to 31 May 2026, it introduces a new photographic series that explores the fragile interplay of brightness and obscurity — a metaphor for identity, memory and the shifting boundaries between what is seen and what remains hidden. As part of her long-term project timepicture, the exhibition sets the tone for MITTE37: thoughtful, precise, and open to global artistic conversations.
Only weeks later, the space expands its reach across the Atlantic. EXPANDED FIELD I – migrating the colour fields brings eleven contemporary positions from Chicago to Germany for the first time. Beginning on 6 June 2026, the exhibition creates a transatlantic resonance chamber, enriched by performances, film presentations and the presence of the participating artists themselves. It is a bold gesture — one that signals MITTE37’s ambition to connect Burgdorf with international artistic networks.
Further exhibitions follow: EXPANDED FIELD II – THE TREE, a thematic exploration of nature and structure; 37 * HAVE A LOOK, a winter presentation of 37 international positions; and SAMMLUNG SCHUMACHER I – DONATION, which introduces new works entering the collection, including donations from all over the world. In March 2027, FRESH MOVES celebrates regional creativity and awards to works that grow, connect and endure.
Mail Art, Fluxus and the First Annual Dedication
From the beginning, MITTE37 has envisioned itself as a home for Mail Art and Fluxus — two artistic movements that thrive on exchange, playfulness and the breaking of boundaries. The space will not only host regular exhibitions in these fields but will also build an expanding Mail Art collection. Each year, MITTE37 will dedicate a special presentation to one Mail Art artist, honoring the spirit of correspondence, circulation and artistic generosity.
The first Mail Art exhibition, TREES in Art, is already in preparation. Its open call invites artists from around the world to respond to the theme of trees — as symbols, as structures, as living beings, as metaphors for connection and rootedness. The exhibition will bring together mailed works from diverse cultures and perspectives, transforming the postal system into a global artistic network. In this way, MITTE37 becomes both a physical and conceptual meeting point: a place where artworks travel, arrive, and continue to grow.
The Quiet Power of 37
And then there is the number 37 — a small, unassuming figure that quietly threads itself through the identity of the space. It comes from the address, Mittelstraße 37, but it carries more than geography. At 37 °C, the human body finds its balance; warmth becomes a state of equilibrium. As a prime number, 37 is indivisible, self-contained, and open to interpretation. It appears in conceptual art, in Fluxus scores, in Mail Art editions, in literature, in pop culture, sometimes as a code, sometimes as a wink.
“You’re number 37, have a look.”
A line from Velvet Underground — cool, understated, and strangely inviting.
In MITTE37, the number becomes a way of thinking: about transitions, about in‑between spaces, about the idea that a center is not a fixed point but a condition. The A37 connects Hannover and Burgdorf; MITTE37 connects local and global, everyday life and artistic experimentation. It is a place where things begin, shift, and find new forms.
MITTE37 is the number that became a room — and the room that continues to carry the number forward.
