KUNSTdemokratie – A Participatory Exhibition

KUNSTdemokratie – A Participatory Exhibition by Rainer Wieczorek
Zwitschermaschine, Berlin
25 July – 2 August 2026, daily 4–8 pm
Opening: 24 July 2026, 6 pm
Potsdamer Str. 161, 10783 Berlin

KUNSTdemokratie presents a ten‑day exploration of art as an open, evolving and socially resonant practice. Conceived by artist, sociologist and Dadasoph Rainer Wieczorek, the exhibition understands art not as a finished object but as a living process shaped by bodies, voices, gestures, materials and shared situations. At a time when cultural institutions increasingly seek new forms of accessibility, participation and social relevance, Wieczorek offers a distinctly contemporary response: here, art is not merely shown but shared; not presented but practiced; not consumed but negotiated.

Unfolding at Zwitschermaschine Berlin from 24 July to 2 August 2026, the exhibition becomes a laboratory of democracy, where aesthetic, social and political dimensions intersect. Wieczorek’s long‑term development of the “social Gesamtkunstwerk” draws on Classical Modernism, Action Art, Dada and the participatory movements of the 1970s, translating these traditions into the urgencies of the present. His practice aligns with artistic positions that understand art as a form of social infrastructure—a space for encounter, negotiation, difference and solidarity.

At the core of KUNSTdemokratie lies the conviction that art becomes socially effective only when it refuses exclusivity. Visitors are not spectators but co‑participants. Each action—drawing, reading, performing—opens a space in which individual gestures become part of a collective experience. A drawn line becomes a path of thought; a reading becomes a temporary linguistic community; the Manyfestival transforms into a self‑organizing public sphere.

Wieczorek’s social art initiatives extend far beyond the exhibition space. Projects such as “Heimat 10.000”, which gifts artworks to unhoused people, or the long‑term project “Der Streikposten” (ongoing since 1985), exemplify his understanding of art as a social resource. These are not symbolic gestures or social services, but aesthetic interventions that seek to touch and transform social realities. They articulate a position in which art can generate public value without losing autonomy, act socially without becoming instrumentalized, and remain political without becoming propaganda.

KUNSTdemokratie is shaped not only by Wieczorek but by a polyphonic network of artists who co‑create the program. This multiplicity is not an addition but a structural principle: the exhibition emerges from horizontal collaboration rather than top‑down curation. The institution becomes a resonant space—enabling, moderating and amplifying.

As long‑standing creative companions, Rainer Wieczorek and Lars Schumacher have developed a shared artistic practice across several collaborative working phases and more than fifteen exhibitions. Their ongoing dialogue—together with the many artists in their wider circle—opens an inviting, vibrant space in which social and critical themes become accessible through curiosity, lightness and a sense of collective joy.

Together, these elements position KUNSTdemokratie as a model for an open institution—one in which art is understood as a social process, as aesthetic research, as democratic practice and as an invitation to co‑creation. The project demonstrates that art does not only produce images, texts or performances, but also forms of living together. In a time of social fragmentation, Wieczorek turns to what art has always been capable of: opening spaces in which people encounter one another—freely, experimentally, in solidarity and with a deeply human orientation.
